In 1980, posters appeared in subway stations and on telephone poles in New York City with a phone number to call. When you called it, you would hear a message: “This is Apology. Apology is not associated with the police or any other organization but rather is a way for you to tell people what you have done wrong and how you feel about it.”

Anne Roos sent a photo for St Patrick's Day: "Here ya go: Cheers and Happy Birthday,"

Karl Horak replied to the question of how they are celebrating Celtic culture through music: "Corned beef, veggies, Irish cheese, homemade spotted dog, washed down with Guinness, of course."

Scot sent a photo: "Shades of Green on their 6th and final performance of the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. This was at Jerzee’s in Glenside to a packed house. Our absolute favorite time of year. My favorite moment was right after we finished….a gent from Ireland came up to me, thanked me/us for bringing such joy all around and working so hard….and he wanted to give a little back. He then took my hand and sang a Gaelic song to me. It was moving. Nothing like the Irish spirit to lift you up.  Thanks for keeping the spirit alive brother."

“You see so many incredible people make one mistake and lose their job or they speak out about something and then the next day something blows up. And so I do think that I often feel like I have to be so careful. And that's hard to do because I'm just naturally curious and I want to know and I want to find and explore and do the things. But I'm aware that … people think I'm too young. I'm too Black. I'm aware of all those things and I'm still going to try.”

Jason Motlagh, a journalist and filmmaker, is a contributing editor at Rolling Stone and the founder of Blackbeard Films. He won the Polk's Sydney Schanberg Prize for “This Will End in Blood and Ashes,” an account of the collapse of order in Haiti.

“Once you've gotten used to this kind of metabolism, it can be hard to walk away from it. Ordinary life can be a little flat sometimes. And so that's always kind of built in. I accept that. I think I've just tried to be more honest about like, [am I taking this risk] because I need a bump my life? Or do you really believe in what you're doing? And I feel like I really do need to believe in the purpose of the story. There has to be some motivation greater than myself."

Brian Howey is a freelance journalist who won the Polk Award for Justice Reporting after exposing a deceptive police tactic widely used in California. He began the project, which was eventually published by the Los Angeles Times and Reveal, as a graduate student in the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

“It’s one thing to hear about this tactic and hear about parents being questioned in this way. It’s another thing entirely to hear the change in a parent’s voice when they realize for the past 20 minutes they’ve been speaking ill of a relative who’s actually been dead the entire time, and to hear that wave of grief and sometimes that feeling of betrayal that cropped up in their voice and how the way that they spoke to the officers afterwards changed.”

Mary Beth Carty emailed a photo: "Hi Marc,

Here is a pic of myself (accordion), my sister Lilly Cart (bodrhan), and my 3rd cousin Heather MacIsaac performing a concert of Irish songs and tunes at the Antigonish Heritage Museum, the former train station in my hometown. The acoustics are great in this space and there was a full crowd.  Volunteers from the Heritage Association provided tea, juice, and snacks for the attendees. We did a number of sing - alongs and there were lots of moments when the crowd joined us on beautiful choruses. A great time! "

James OConnor emailed a photo: "Hi Marc Here is a pic with Jim O’Connor and Jim Chetz Keegan of Boston Blackthorne backstage at the beautiful Colony Theatre in Woodstock NY with the Dublin City Ramblers. We opened the show for the Ramblers who sounded fantastic and were incredibly gracious to us."

Jeffrey McCafferty emailed: "We had a record day in pittsburgh…America’s Grand St Patrick’s Day powered by the Pittsburgh Penguins…featuring 500,000 spectators, FNB’s St.Patrick’s Family Fair in the Square, 200 entries with 20,000 participants, great weather, 20 bands"

Virginia Davis emailed: "Hi Marc  -  Happy Birthday!  I’m super - swamped today and maybe tomorrow, but I’ll get back to you as soon as possible!  We actually have a new CD I need to get over to you  -  thanks! "

Betty Collette emailed a shirt picture: "Hi Marc  -  I was sewing pillows, cooking corned beef dinner, baking blueberry scones, and listening to Irish music. Here's my newest tshirt of The High Kings. We recently were lucky to see them nearby in Tomball, Texas!

Happy St. Patrick's Day and Happy Birthday, too!! "

Meribah Knight is a reporter with Nashville Public Radio. She won the Polk Award for Podcasting for “The Kids of Rutherford County,” produced with ProPublica and Serial, which revealed a shocking approach to juvenile discipline in one Tennessee county.

“Where does it leave me? It leaves me with a searing anger that is going to propel me to the next thing. But we’ve made some real improvement. And that’s worth celebrating. That’s worth recognizing and saying, This work matters, people are paying attention.

This is the third in a week-long series of conversations with winners of this year's George Polk Awards in Journalism.

Jesse Coburn is an investigative reporter at Streetsblog. He won the Polk Award for Local Reporting for "Ghost Tags," his series on the black market for temporary license plates.

“You can imagine this having never become a problem, because it’s so weird. What a weird scam. I’m going to print and sell tens of thousands of paper license plates. But someone figured it out. And then a lot more people followed. It just exploded.”

Amel Guettatfi and Julia Steers won this year's George Polk Award for Television Reporting for “Inside Wagner,” their Vice News investigation of Russian mercenaries on the Ukraine front and in the Central African Republic.

“One of the best takeaways I got from seven or eight years at Vice is that it’s not enough for something to be important when you’re figuring out how to make a story. It’s the intersection of important and interesting. And that has taught me that people will watch anything, anywhere, as long as it’s interesting. Nobody owes us their time. The onus is on us to explain things in an interesting, compelling way. I’m hoping that a landscape opens up somewhere else that sees that and understands that can be done anywhere in the world.”

Vinson Cunningham is a staff writer for The New Yorker. His novel, published in March 2024, is Great Expectations.

“I think the job is just paying a bunch of attention. If you're a person like me, where thoughts and worries are intruding on your consciousness all the time, it is a great relief to have something to just over-describe and over-pay-attention to—and kind of just give all of your latent, usually anxious attention to this one thing. That, to me, is a great joy.”

This episode, and the next couple of episodes, are about word games! Today, Joshua Blackburn recounts how his sons' uninspiring English homework led to him inventing the language quiz game League of the Lexicon; and Kathryn Hymes and Hakan Seyalıoğlu of Thorny Games explain how they make topics like language loss and deciphering alien language into creative play.

Word Play part 1 is about how Leslie Scott of Oxford Games makes word games like Ex Libris and Flummoxed. It was one of the earliest episodes of the show! I remember that my first recording with Leslie had failed and she’s so kind that she did the interview all over again, the second time in Kipferl Austrian cafe in London, if you ever need somewhere to buy Mozartkugeln in London.

Megan Kimble is the former executive editor of The Texas Observer and has written for The New York TimesTexas Monthly, and The Guardian. Her new book is City Limits: Infrastructure, Inequality, and the Future of America’s Highways.

“I have never lived in a city that was not wrapped in highways. It’s hard for me to imagine anything else. And I think that’s true for a lot of people today. ... [But] we have known since the origins of the interstate highways program that building highways through cities doesn’t fix traffic. And yet we keep doing it. To me, that really fueled a lot of the book. It wasn’t supposed to be this way.”

ABOUT THE NEW ADS IN THE PUBLIC FEED

If you’ve been listening to the show over the last couple of weeks, you will have noticed something new to the show. Ads placed at the beginning and ending of each episode. The show has been published regularly for almost 19 years with very few ads, outside of those for my Celtic Invasion Vacations and Patreon.

I’ll be honest. I’m not a huge fan of advertising…or corporations in general. And I’m still deciding whether I’m gonna continue having ads in the show.

The fact is that this podcast costs a decent amount to produce as I’ll tell you about later. We’ve built something incredible here. We have a large number of Patrons of the Podcast who support this show each and every week. It’s mind - blowing the amount of support this show gets.

But it doesn’t cover all of my expenses. And there’s so much more I’d like to do to reach more Celtic music fans, which requires money. This would be one way to help us grow our podcast.

So if you don’t like those ads, please become a Patron of the Podcast, because they are not included in any of the Patreon shows.

THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!

You are amazing. It is because of your generosity that you get to hear so much great Celtic music each and every week.

Sherron Sloan emailed a photo from St Augustine Celtic Festival: "Marc, you've  got to check out the St. Augustine Celtic festival sometime. That's where I first heard the Gothard sisters! It is such a fun weekend."

Ryan Weyls emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, I've attached photos from a pair of shows I went to this weekend:

Dàimh at the Town Crier in Beacon, NY and Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfe Tones at the Rambling House in the Bronx. The lighting at Rambling House was a bit harsh and didn't agree with my phone, so I've only included two photos. Both bands sounded excellent. I might be checking out the other version of the Wolfe Tones (the one led by Derek's brother) later this week and will send photos if I make it. Thanks for your wonderful podcast.

Tim Hughes emailed photos from the Madison WI Shamrock Shuffle: "Had to listen to I&CMP during the run! Before and after pictures."

Zach Harris is a journalist whose latest article for Rolling Stone is "Meet the Gen Z Hothead Burning Up Pro Bowling."

“I'm not like a staff writer who has … status and access. But if I come up with something fun that you've never heard of that might connect to the larger culture, then it kind of hits a nerve and a sweet spot for me. Someone like a pro skateboarder or a pro bowler, you guys have never heard of. And so being able to present a person and a culture and a world to a wider audience, I think suits me well and has been really a fun way to do profiles.”

The word 'hypochondria' has travelled from meaning physical ailments in a particular region of your body, to ones that are only in your mind. It has been in fashion, and thoroughly out; it has been subject to a range of treatments; it has been lucrative for quacks; and it's a very understandable form of anxiety - which I have, and so does Caroline Crampton, author of the new book A Body Made of Glass: A History of Hypochondria.

Content note: this episode contains a lot of discussion about health anxiety. There are mentions of cancer, doctors and hospitals - but not detailed accounts of medical conditions or treatments.

James OConnor emailed: "Jim from Boston Blackthorne here. St Patricks week will be a fun one for us with a little festival in Northampton MA on March 9 then on the 15th we are opening for the Dublin City Ramblers at the Colony Theatre in Woodstock NY. Next night in the Berkshires at the Heritage House in Lenox MA.  We end the season as usual at Brennan’s on the Holyoke Parade route with all 5 original members for our 20th year!

Hope you have a wonderful month and thanks for all you have done for Boston Blackthorne!"

Darin Wallace emailed: "Hi Marc! And an early Happy Birthday to you! ☘️

Stout Pounders is my band and you know us. We will be celebrating by playing several gigs, starting with a show on March 10 in Spokane, WA at the Knitting Factory with the legendary Young Dubliners. So if you could add one of our songs and one of theirs to your podcast list that would be great!!! We have a newer live album streaming on all major platforms that I submitted to you a little while ago, but anything you like of ours is fine by me.

We will also be Headlining a show March 14 at the Spanish Ballroom at the McMenamins Elk Temple location in Tacoma with an opening band called Slainte and accompanied by the Seattle Irish Dance Company who will be dancing throughout the evening to the band's songs and in between. Will be a heck of a Pre - Paddy's Party.

We play Shawn O'Donnell's Everett location on Friday the 15th, The Blarney Stone Pub in Seattle on the 16th, and March 17 THE BIG DAY we are the band for the 40th Anniversary of Seattle's longest running (pun intended) 5K St. Paddy's Day Dash. The later that day back at O'Donnell's in Everett to cap off the day and week of fun.

Hope yours is a good one too! Thanks for all you do for us Indy Celts!"

Ben Doran messaged on Facebook: “When I received the "music only version" of the "The Gaelic Blessing" podcast, I was immediately reminded of one of the most moving arrangements of The Irish Blessing that I have heard  -  - by Bill O'Connor and Larry Theiss on their – "Traditional And Original" recording.

I am getting ready to have a day off tomorrow and will  get to chores and baking for the "Wild Hog in the Woods" usual Friday night concert that we host at a neighborhood center here in Madison. While I am mixing and baking, I'll surely/certainly listen to that "Gaelic Blessing" program in its entirety. Thanks!”

Ryan S. emailed some photos: "Hi Marc. I love the Celtic Women episodes!!

I am currently building trails outside of austin while I listen to the cast.the spring flowers are already out!"

Shel O'Toole emailed a photo: "Hi Marc, As I'm listening today I'm promoting the International Women's Day event I organised for the Ballarat and District Irish Association. The all women trio I play with, Skedaddle is performing on the day.   I'm also looking at ways to promote my newly released poetry book Wildsong. I'll be officially launching it at the IWD lunch.

I'm loving the Celtic Women special. There's so many fabulous Irish women singers and musicians. Noirin Ni Rian, the sean - ós singer and chanter, Sandra Joyce singer and bodhran player are two amazing teachers I met at the Irish World Music Summer School  - Blas, many years ago.  Niamh Parsons & Delores Keane are firm favourites & I love discovering new  female artists.

I'll probably go to a session on St Patrick's day and there's a band playing at one of the Irish pubs in the evening I want to see. Sliánte"

Christopher Fennell replied to my Re: Happy St Patrick's Month Feedback Request:  "Hi Marc, I love your podcast! I'm celebrating the early part of St. Patrick's month by volunteering in the Iditarod race in Alaska. I'll be singing Celtic tunes while taking care of the huskies running for 1,049 frozen miles from Anchorage to Nome. I have dual citizenship with the Republic, as my grandparents immigrated from Roscommon, Dublin, and Limerick. Perhaps I can start a sled - dog team representing the Republic somewhere in the future. Best wishes,"

    Ben Doran replied to my feedback request: "Hello Marc;

The weather here in Wisconsin today definitely inspires kilt wear. And weather/whether or not it is nearly this nice on St. Patrick's Day weekend, I'll be kilting it up. And singing with the band Ar Ais Aris (a - rash a - reesh)("Back Again") on Saturday in Berwyn, Il; then Sunday, to Galena, Il; then finish up with our two usual gigs for retirement communities in Rockton, Il and Beloit, WI on Monday. I will (yep) probably color my beard in orange and green for Monday.

I think among the many new sounds/new music that I've heard from your podcasts, it would be the band, Larkin, that has my fancy (this week, anyway). No, I don't consider myself fickle, just distracted.  Slainte, Marc!!"

woodland folk emailed a photo: "heading to the wood for a fire and a practice, can listen then my friend... Attached is a picture,me and another friend who plays a Welsh harp, stopped to play a little on the river brue ...."

Nathanael Stottlemyer emailed: "We're losing Good Celtic Music

Hi Marc, It was last year that I started listening to your podcast, and like a mad man I started your podcast at the very beginning. I'm now at the year 2016 and I've loved every episode. There is just one problem. When I look up the bands that I loved and that I want to purchase their music, they're gone. There's no website, no Spotify, no YouTube, sometimes I can't even find their CD's used! And it's a shame, because they're good songs and sometimes, take Young Hunting by Serious Kitchen (Which was in your best of the year podcasts more than once) it's the only Celtic rendition of the song on the internet. I managed to buy the last Tig! Album off the internet, but it's looking bad for some of my other favorites.

We're losing years of Celtic music, and it's a shame, especially since I know that the members of Serious Kitchen and others are still around. I don't suppose I'm missing a way to buy these albums. I really hope I am. I don't suppose you could use your amazing Celtfather connections and reach out to some of the people of these bands and see if they'd put on Bandcamp? Or perhaps a huge "Best of the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast" album with some of these lost treasures? They're some of the best music I've heard. Thanks, Nathanael"

WELCOME THE IRISH & CELTIC MUSIC PODCAST

    * Helping you celebrate Celtic culture through music. I am Marc Gunn.

This podcast is here to build a diverse Celtic community and help the incredible artists who so generously share their music with you. If you hear music you love, please email artists to let them know you heard them on the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. Musicians depend on your generosity to keep making music. So please find a way to support them. Buy a CD, Album Pin, Shirt, Digital Download, or join their communities on Patreon.

You can find a link to all of the artists in the shownotes, along with show times, when you visit our website at celticmusicpodcast.com.

If you are a Celtic musician or in a Celtic band, then please submit your band to be played on the podcast. You don’t have to send in music or an EPK. You will get a free eBook called Celtic Musicians Guide to Digital Music and learn how to follow the podcast. It’s 100% free. Just email Email follow@bestcelticmusic and of course, listeners can learn how to subscribe to the podcast and get a free music-only episode.

THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!

You are amazing. It is because of your generosity that you get to hear so much great Celtic music each and every week.

Your kindness pays for our engineer, graphic designer, Celtic Music Magazine editor, promotion of the podcast, and allows me to buy the music I play here. It also pays for my time creating the show each and every week.

As a patron, you get music-only episodes before regular listeners, vote in the Celtic Top 20, stand-alone stories, and you get a private feed to listen to the show.  All that for as little as $1 per episode.

HERE IS YOUR THREE STEP PLAN TO SUPPORT THE PODCAST

    1. Go to our Patreon page.
    2. Decide how much you want to pledge every week, $1, $5, $25. Make sure to cap how much you want to spend per month.
    3. Keep listening to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast to celebrate Celtic culture through music.

You can become a generous Patron of the Podcast on Patreon at SongHenge.com.
